A wheel lathe is a precision machine tool designed to machine the tread, flange, and bore of railway vehicle wheels. It removes material from a rotating wheel clamped between centers or in a chuck, using a cutting tool held in a saddle that moves along a bed. The machine restores wheels worn in service or finishes newly cast wheels to specification, bringing the tread radius and flange profile back to nominal dimensions so wheels roll smoothly on rail and stay on the track.
Wheel lathes are heavy, rigid machines because wheels are massive, often weighing 500 kg to over a ton, and require substantial cutting forces. The spindle rotates the wheel at relatively low speed, typically 40 to 120 rpm depending on wheel diameter. The cutting head, fitted with carbide or high-speed steel tools, moves radially inward and axially along the wheel face. A well-designed lathe holds tolerance of 0.5 mm or better on tread diameter and flange geometry across the wheel's life.
Two main configurations exist: pit lathes, where the wheel sits horizontally above a sunken bed and workers stand at ground level, and vertical lathes, where the wheel hangs vertically from above. Pit lathes suit heavy maintenance work in rail depots; vertical machines occupy less floor space and are more common in modern facilities. Both types often include automatic feed systems that gradually reduce tool depth as the tool moves across the tread, reducing chatter and tool wear.
Why wheels need machining
Wheels wear in three ways: the tread flattens and loses its slight conical profile, the flange grows thicker, and the wheel may develop flat spots if the train has skidded or locked brakes. A tread worn 30 mm or more is unsafe. Reprofiling on a wheel lathe can restore a wheel to service life three or four times before it must be scrapped. Modern wheels for freight trains are typically turned every 50,000 to 150,000 km, depending on load and track condition.
The term wheel lathe is specific to rail work; similar machines exist for road vehicle wheels and for grinding railway wheels, but those are called wheel balancing machines or wheel grinders respectively. The skill lies in reading wear patterns, setting up the tool geometry correctly, and managing metal removal so the wheel stays in balance and the profile matches track specifications precisely.
