A whim is a large rotating drum or capstan, typically mounted vertically, that uses external power (historically horses, later steam or electric motors) to raise ore, water, or personnel from mine shafts. The drum winds a rope or chain connected to a bucket, skip, or cage, converting rotational force into vertical lift. Whims were essential infrastructure in both metalliferous and coal mines, capable of handling loads from a few hundred kilograms up to several tonnes depending on the drum diameter and power source.

The physical structure consists of a strong wooden or iron drum mounted on a robust axle, bearings, and a frame that anchors the whole assembly at the shaft collar. Rope or chain wraps around the drum; as it rotates, the wound rope shortens and raises the load. Early whims used animal power, typically two to four horses walking in a circle around a horizontal drum (sometimes called a gin), or stepping on a treadwheel to drive a vertical drum. Steam engines replaced horses from the mid-1800s, offering continuous power and much higher hoist speeds.

Whims served multiple purposes in mine operations. The primary duty was ore extraction, lifting loaded skips from working levels to surface. Secondary duties included dewatering (pumping water from flooded sections via bucket chains), and in later installations, raising and lowering miners themselves in cages. A single shaft often required several whims stacked vertically or working in parallel to handle production targets and ventilation requirements.

Mechanical hazards and wear patterns

Rope failure was the constant threat. Extended use, fraying, and corrosion weakened the rope; unspooling or slipping on the drum caused sudden load drops. Operators had to watch for uneven winding and adjust rope lay to prevent kinking. The drum itself wore unevenly if the load swung, and bearing seizure from poor lubrication could lock the entire mechanism. Early steam-powered whims often lacked brakes; stopping a spinning drum under heavy load tested both the engine cutoff valve and the operator's nerve.

The term whim is thought to derive from older grinding or pumping machinery terminology, though the exact etymology is unclear. It persisted in British mining vocabulary well into the twentieth century, even as electric motors and modern drum hoists replaced steam. In some regions, particularly South Africa and Australia, the term remained standard longer than in Britain or North America, where hoist or headgear became preferred.

A whim occupied a specific place in mine hierarchy: below the main headgear (which handled the primary deep shaft) but crucial for secondary shafts, ventilation shafts, and pumping stations. Its efficiency directly affected daily tonnage and workplace safety. Engineers and winding engineers specialized in whim operation and maintenance, and the position of whim operator was a skilled, often dangerous role requiring familiarity with rope signals, load weights, and engine behavior.
