A wiring harness; a bundle of wires, tied together but not enclosed in a rigid conduit, that transmit signals or electrical current within a device.

A wiring loom is a pre-assembled bundle of individual wires or cables, bound together with tape, clips, or spiral wrap, that carries electrical current or signals from one point to another within a machine, vehicle, or control panel. Unlike conduit, which is rigid metal or plastic tubing, a loom is flexible and conforms to the shape of the space it occupies, making it efficient for routing around obstacles and fitting into confined areas.

The wires in a loom are typically grouped by function or voltage class before bundling. A single loom might contain power conductors, control signal wires, shielded twisted pairs for analog instrumentation, and grounding straps, all bound into one manageable harness. This pre-assembly reduces on-site wiring errors and labour, especially in equipment with dozens or hundreds of individual connections. Looms are particularly common in automotive, machinery control systems, and industrial automation where production volumes justify custom harnesses.

Wire gauge, insulation rating, and conductor count vary widely depending on application. A simple control loom for a small motor might contain four or five wires of 1.5 to 2.5 mm² cross-section; a transmission harness in heavy equipment can include dozens of conductors ranging from 0.5 mm² signal wire to 10 mm² or larger power carries. The binding material must withstand the expected temperature range, vibration, and chemical exposure; common wrap materials include cloth tape, PVC spiral wrap, or adhesive-backed Nomex for high-temperature environments.

Failure modes and inspection

Looms fail most often through abrasion of individual wire insulation, typically where the bundle rubs against sharp sheet-metal edges, bearing housings, or moving parts. Poor routing or inadequate support leads to repetitive flexing and accelerated fatigue. Moisture ingress at connector ends causes corrosion and intermittent faults. Inspection should include visual checks for chafing, proper strain relief at both ends, and continuity testing of critical paths.

The term "loom" comes from textiles and refers to the way individual threads are woven into cloth; in electrical work, it describes the crossing and bundling of wires in a similar fashion, though without the interlocking structure. This makes looms faster and cheaper to assemble than woven harnesses, which were more common in older equipment where individual wire routing was labour-intensive. Modern looms are often produced using automated taping or wrapping machines, and custom looms can be specified during equipment design to match exact internal geometry.
