Yaw is the rotation of a ship or boat about its vertical axis, causing the bow to swing left and right relative to the desired course. Unlike pitch (fore-and-aft rocking) or roll (side-to-side tilting), yaw directly affects heading and steering. A vessel under yaw does not point where it is supposed to go, even if propulsion and trim remain stable. The motion is measured in degrees of deviation from the intended compass bearing.
Yaw occurs most commonly in heavy following seas, where wave trains push the stern sideways as they pass under the hull. It also develops in beam seas when wavelength approaches the vessel's length, creating alternating lift and drop at bow and stern. Wind, too, induces yaw if the underwater profile and superstructure interact asymmetrically with gusts. Shallow water and strong cross-currents can amplify the effect. A poorly balanced rudder, wear in the steering mechanism, or uneven propeller thrust will worsen yaw and make it harder for the helmsman to correct.
Managing yaw in operation
Excessive yaw wastes fuel because the vessel travels a longer path than the direct course requires. It also strains the steering gear and increases fatigue loads on the hull. Modern vessels reduce yaw through hull design (fuller sterns and deeper keels improve directional stability) and active steering systems that anticipate motion. Trim and ballast distribution affect the center of gravity and the hydrodynamic balance fore and aft, both of which influence yaw tendency. Helmsmen learn to anticipate yaw in certain sea states and apply small, gentle rudder corrections rather than aggressive helm movements, which often make oscillation worse.
The word yaw derives from nautical terminology of uncertain origin, possibly linked to Old Norse or Dutch sailing vocabulary. It appears in maritime records from at least the 17th century and refers specifically to unsteadiness in heading, distinct from other forms of ship motion. In aerospace and vehicle engineering, yaw has the same meaning: rotation about the vertical axis of any craft.
