keyway

The recessed part of a keyed joint, in which the key resides.

A small feature, and the entire reason a shaft can turn a hub instead of spinning uselessly inside it.

In use

The pulley won't seat because somebody's burred the edge of the keyway, so give it a light dress with a file before you try again.
