Anneal: Heating metal to soften, not harden it
Outside the foundry, annealing means toughening through trial. On the shop floor, it means the opposite: using heat to make metal less brittle.
To anneal in everyday speech is to toughen or strengthen, often through hardship. The word carries overtones of moral improvement: a person anneals their character through adversity. It suggests that heat and stress, endured and survived, leave you stronger.
In metallurgy, annealing does the reverse. A metalworker anneals steel or copper by heating it to a specific temperature, holding it there, then cooling it slowly. The heat allows atoms in the crystalline lattice to move and reorganize. Internal stresses relax. The cooled metal becomes softer, more ductile, less likely to crack or shatter under stress. Annealing removes the brittleness that develops when metal is worked cold, hammered, or bent repeatedly.
The metaphorical meaning inverts the physical one. Tempering, toughening, annealing in common English all suggest that difficulty hardens the spirit. In the foundry, annealing literally softens the material. A blacksmith may anneal a blade mid-forging to prevent it from becoming too brittle to work. Only after annealing can the steel be formed further without cracking.
The word came into English from Old French aneler, to heat to flame-color. The physical sense has been precise since medieval metalworking: the process of heating and cooling to alter crystalline structure. The figurative sense developed later, borrowing the language of improvement and change but severing it from the actual metallurgical outcome. What toughens a person weakens a metal, yet both claim the name of annealing.
