Inbond: When Bricks Connect Through the Wall
In everyday English, a bond is a connection or agreement. In bricklaying, it is a specific orientation that locks the wall together.
To most people, a bond is a tie that holds things together: a financial instrument, a personal relationship, a promise. The word carries a sense of linking or securing across a distance or difference.
In construction, an inbond brick or stone is one laid lengthwise across the full thickness of a wall. Instead of running parallel to the wall's face, the brick's length runs perpendicular to it, penetrating from the outer wythe to the inner wythe. This orientation is fundamental to wall strength. A wall made of only stretchers (bricks laid lengthwise along the wall's length) would be weak and prone to collapse. Inbond units tie the outer and inner layers together, distributing load and resisting lateral pressure.
The term bond itself in masonry refers to the overall pattern of brick and stone placement: how stretchers, headers, soldiers, and other orientations are arranged. A Flemish bond alternates stretchers and headers in a visible pattern. An English bond uses courses of stretchers alternating with courses of all headers. Each pattern is designed to lock the wall's layers together and maintain structural integrity.
The shared logic between everyday bonding and masonry bonding is literal: the inbond unit physically bonds the wall. But construction terminology inverted the emphasis. Everyday language focuses on the abstract act of connecting; masonry terminology focuses on the physical object and its orientation that makes connection possible. The metaphor became concrete, then the concrete became the definition.
