Brow: The eyebrow-shaped gallery in coal mines
To most people, a brow is the ridge above your eye. In mining, it is a horizontal passage driven across the working coal face.
To anyone above ground, the brow is a familiar anatomical feature: the arch of bone and skin above the eye, which raises and furrows with expression. The word comes from Old English and Germanic roots, and its meaning has been stable for over a thousand years.
In coal mining, a brow is something entirely different: a gallery or heading that runs horizontally across the coal seam itself, perpendicular to the main line of working. It is driven through the coal as part of the extraction plan, allowing miners to access the face more systematically and to establish ventilation routes. The brow serves as a connecting passage between the main roadways and the coal face, and its geometry determines how efficiently miners can work and how safely air circulates through the working area. A well-planned brow layout is essential to pit productivity and safety.
The name likely derives from the visual impression: when viewed from above or from a distance, a brow running across the coal face resembles the natural ridge of an eyebrow crossing a slope. This kind of anatomical metaphor is common in mining vocabulary, where features of the body have been borrowed to describe the structure of the pit itself. The seam itself is called a layer; a coal face is the exposed surface being worked; a brow is the transverse passage that marks it off and makes it approachable.
The browman, by contrast, was not a miner working in the brow itself, but rather the worker stationed at the pithead in charge of operating the cages that carried miners and coal up and down the shaft. His job was above ground, although his position depended entirely on the work happening in the brows and galleries below.
