brow: crosscut from main roadway to coal face
A brow is a working passage driven perpendicular or at an angle across a coal seam, connecting the main haulage road to the coal face where miners extract the coal. It serves as the operational spine of a working section, carrying air flow, miners, equipment, and sometimes conveyor belts or tubs from the established roadway infrastructure to the productive coal wall.
Brows are typically driven along the natural dip or strike of the coal bed, following the geometry of the seam itself rather than fighting against it. In longwall operations, the brow may be a single, carefully aligned gallery; in board and pillar layouts, multiple brows branch off a main roadway at intervals of 20 to 50 meters depending on the seam thickness and planned pillar size. The cross-sectional dimensions vary with the scale of extraction: a hand-worked seam might require only 2 meters by 1.8 meters, while mechanized extraction demands 3 to 4 meters wide to accommodate powered cutting machines and conveyors.
Ventilation and support are critical design concerns. A brow must conduct fresh air to the working face and exhaust return air without excessive resistance, so its gradient and any tight bends are planned to minimize pressure drop. The roadway must also be timbered or otherwise supported to hold back the surrounding strata; failure in a brow can isolate workers and cut off escape routes.
The term reflects the geographical sense of brow as a ridge or forehead: the brow runs across the face of the coal, occupying the upper or leading edge of the seam as it is worked downward and inward. Regional variations exist; some British coalfields used brow interchangeably with crosscut, while American mines might call the same feature a breakthrough or simply a cross-haul.
Obstruction or deterioration of a brow creates serious operational hazards: air short-circuits around bad seals, reducing oxygen at the face; blockages force miners into longer return journeys; and roof fall in a brow can trap equipment and personnel. Maintenance and regular inspection of brow conditions were therefore standard daily tasks in any working mine.
