Bump: A tap versus a shock from below
To most people, a bump is a gentle collision. To a miner, it is a violent shift in the rock that threatens the whole operation.
In everyday speech, a bump is a soft or moderate collision: you bump your head on a low doorway, or your car bumps over a pothole. The word carries a sense of something light, even comical. Bumper cars at a fairground bump into one another all day without harm.
In mining and extraction, a bump is the opposite of gentle. It is a sudden, violent movement of underground strata, almost always preceded by a sharp cracking sound like a gunshot or dynamite blast. The rock shifts without warning. Pillars collapse, the roof falls, and the ground itself heaves upward or sideways. Bumps are among the most feared hazards in deep hard-rock mines, especially in gold and coal operations where high stress builds up in the surrounding rock as ore is removed.
The term borrowed from the everyday world because the initial warning sign, that characteristic sound, resembles the noise of a bump: a report, a crack. But the physics are entirely different. A bump in everyday collision is a brief transfer of momentum. A mining bump is the sudden release of energy stored in rock under extreme pressure, energy that has accumulated over geological time and been destabilized by excavation.
The automotive industry also uses bump in a more technical sense: a bumper is a bar or assembly designed to absorb impact in a collision. A bumper jack is a lifting tool that grips the bumper to hoist a vehicle. These terms came later and show how the original word, meaning a small impact, came to name the mechanism meant to resist it. But in the mine, no mechanism can resist a true bump. The only defense is to monitor for the warning sound and evacuate before the rock moves.
