A bump is a sudden, violent rupture and displacement of rock around an underground excavation, typically a coal mine or hard rock mine. The event begins with audible cracking sounds, often described as sharp reports or rumbling, followed by actual movement of the surrounding strata. The rock may shift by centimeters to meters. The characteristic noise precedes the physical movement, which is why the term "bump" captures both the acoustic and kinetic aspects of the phenomenon.
Bumps occur when stress accumulated in the rock mass around the mine opening is suddenly released. Deep mines experience higher vertical and horizontal stress from the weight of overlying rock. As mining operations enlarge the void space, stress concentrates at the edges of the excavation. When the rock strength at these pressure points is exceeded, failure happens abruptly rather than gradually. This is distinct from continuous creep or slow settlement. Bumps are therefore most common in deep underground operations, particularly in hard rock mines operating below 500 meters.
Recognition and consequences
The preceding sound is crucial for personnel safety. Miners learn to recognize the distinctive acoustic signature as a warning to evacuate the work area. After the audible phase, actual ground movement follows within seconds. Bumps can dislodge falls of rock, collapse pillars or ribs, and damage support structures. Severe bumps have caused loss of life and injury, making them a major hazard in deep mining. Mine operators monitor seismic activity continuously using sensors to detect stress buildup and small-scale fracturing that may precede larger bumps.
Prevention and control strategies include stress relief methods such as destressing holes (boreholes drilled to relieve pressure), controlled blasting sequences that manage stress release, and pillar design that accounts for depth and local geology. The term "bump" is used across coal mining, gold mining, and hard rock extraction globally, though regional variations exist in terminology and the exact depth thresholds at which bumps become a primary hazard.
