Corona: From halo to electrical glow
A crown of light means one thing to everyone else, and quite another to the electrician working with high-voltage power lines.
To most people, a corona is a crown, or a halo. The word itself comes from Latin for the wreath worn by Roman rulers. In astronomy and solar physics, the corona is the luminous outer envelope of the sun, visible during a total eclipse as a white crown around the dark disk of the moon's shadow. The term also describes a crown-like anatomical structure, from the corona of a tooth to the corona radiata in the brain.
In energy and utilities, corona has a much sharper meaning. It is the visible glow, often bluish or purplish, that forms in the air immediately surrounding a pointed metal conductor when the voltage exceeds a certain threshold. This is corona discharge, the sudden ionization of air molecules in the strong electric field near the conductor's surface. The glow you see is light emitted by those ionized molecules as they recombine. On power transmission lines carrying hundreds of thousands of volts, corona appears as a faint luminescence around the wires, especially visible at night or in humid conditions.
Corona discharge creates real problems for utilities. The ionization consumes energy that should be transmitted to consumers, raising losses on the line. The discharge also generates radio noise that interferes with communications. Over time, the corona can degrade the conductor surface itself. Engineers design transmission lines to minimize corona by using large-diameter conductors, bundling multiple wires, and maintaining smooth surfaces that reduce the peak electric field. In some cases, the corona halo is not a flaw to eliminate but a sign that the line is operating near its design limit.
The shared imagery explains the name. Both the astronomical corona and the electrical glow form a luminous crown or ring around a central object. The corona discharge, though, is not a static halo but an active ionization, a transformation of air into plasma. When voltage engineers speak of corona, they are describing a threshold phenomenon: a point at which the dielectric strength of air fails, and the insulator becomes a conductor. That boundary is where the crown of light appears.
