Decade: Ten years or ten times the resistance
In everyday language it marks time; in the lab it marks increments of electrical resistance.
To most people, a decade is a period of ten years. The 1980s was a decade. We speak of decades of experience, or a decade of war. The word comes from Latin decem, meaning ten, and has marked that span of time for centuries.
In energy and utilities work, a decade is something you hold in your hand. It is a network of resistors, capacitors, or inductors wired in series so that each step on a dial or switch increases the value by a factor of ten. Turn the first knob and you move between 1 and 10 ohms. Turn the second and you move between 10 and 100 ohms. A decade box, the most common form, sits on the bench during circuit prototyping. You dial in precise resistance values without swapping physical components in and out. In electrical engineering, a decade counter works the same way: it counts from 0 to 9, then resets, dividing a binary pulse stream into decimal steps.
Both senses stem from the base number ten. A decade of years divides time into ten-unit blocks. A decade of resistance divides an electrical range into ten-unit steps. The metaphor works because both rely on the same principle: breaking a span into ten equal parts.
The electrical decade entered industrial vocabulary during the mid-20th century as test equipment became more precise and circuit design more standardized. Technicians needed quick ways to dial in and verify component values. The decade box solved that problem. The name carried over naturally from the decimal logic already embedded in engineering: we count in tens, we measure in powers of ten, so we build our test rigs in decades. The language borrowed a familiar word from time and applied it to resistance the way the ancient Romans applied their decimal system to both calendars and measurements.
