Degree: From Temperature to Arc Curvature

To a surveyor, a degree measures how much a curved line bends, not how hot something is or how far something goes.

In everyday speech, a degree is a unit of temperature. It can also mean an extent or level: a degree of difficulty, a degree of separation. In academia, you earn a degree. But on the surveying crew, the word has nothing to do with heat or achievement. It describes curvature, the way a line or arc deviates from straight.

A surveyor uses degrees to specify horizontal and vertical angles in the field and to describe the curvature of roads, railways and underground pipes. In circular curve notation, one degree represents the angle subtended by a chord of fixed length, usually 100 feet (or 30 metres in metric practice). A sharper curve has a larger degree value. A gentle curve approaching a straight line approaches zero degrees. This notation lets surveyors and engineers specify and communicate the exact bending radius of a designed path without stating radius directly.

The connection between the everyday and the technical senses runs through angle measurement itself. A thermometer uses degrees to mark positions along a scale, dividing the space between freezing and boiling into equal intervals. A protractor uses degrees to divide a full rotation (360 degrees) into equal parts. The surveyor's degree borrows this same angular language. Where a thermometer measures thermal intensity along a scale, a surveyor measures angular intensity along a curve. Both use the degree as a precise, repeatable subdivision of a defined span.

The terminology has deep roots. The Babylonians divided a circle into 360 parts, likely based on their sexagesimal number system. This stuck. One degree of arc equals 1/360 of a full circle. Medieval astronomers applied it to celestial angles. Medieval engineers applied it to the arcs traced by waterwheels and arches. By the 19th century, surveyors and railroad engineers had formalized the degree of curvature as a way to specify the sharpness of a turn without carrying compass bearings through an entire project.
