Gear: from tooth to ratio
To most people, a gear is a toothed wheel. On the shop floor, it is a choice: the ratio you select when you shift.
In everyday speech, a gear is a cog, a mechanical wheel with teeth cut into its rim. Two gears mesh together, their teeth engaging so that one drives the other. The shape, size and number of teeth determine how much force and speed transfer between them. That is the fundamental machine: the gear as an object.
In industrial work, especially in vehicles and machinery with transmissions, the word means something different. A gear is no longer the part itself. It is a selected state, a combination of interlocking gears that produces a particular ratio of input to output speed. When you shift gears in a truck, you are not moving a physical gear wheel. You are moving a fork inside the gearbox that slides one gear into mesh with another, or out of mesh with one and into mesh with a different one. The result is a new ratio. Low gear gives high torque but low speed. High gear gives low torque but high speed. Neutral, sometimes called angel gear in shop slang, meshes no gears at all.
The language reflects this shift in meaning. A creeper gear is not a single tooth wheel; it is the lowest of several available ratios, a state you can select. A gear change is not a physical replacement of a broken cog; it is an instance of moving the shifter, of selecting a different ratio. A crash gearbox, used in older trucks and tractors, is a transmission where the gears can collide noisily because they are in constant mesh; you must time your shift carefully to change ratios without grinding the teeth.
The etymology rests on metaphor and borrowed precision. In French, the word gire meant the act of turning. English engineers adopted it for the device that turns, the toothed wheel. But as transmissions became more complex, the word stretched to mean not just the wheel but the whole arrangement it participated in, the ratio it enabled. The gearbox does not hold one gear; it holds many, and you select among them.
Bevel gears, used where shafts must meet at an angle, carry the same dual sense. A bevel gear is both a physical cone-shaped wheel with angled teeth and a selected configuration within a differential or transfer case. The word accommodates both the part and the function, the object and the choice.
