gear

A particular combination or choice of interlocking gears, such that a particular gear ratio is achieved; often selected via a shifter.

gear: a meshed ratio that delivers torque at a chosen speed

A gear in the operational sense is not a single cog but rather a selected pairing of meshed teeth that produces a specific mechanical advantage between input and output shafts. When you shift gears, you are routing power through different tooth-count combinations. A small pinion driving a large ring gear multiplies torque but sacrifices speed; the reverse arrangement sacrifices torque for higher output speed. The gear ratio is the simple division of driven gear teeth by driving gear teeth, and this number directly governs how hard or fast the final work happens.

Manual and automatic transmissions hold multiple gear sets in a single housing. Shifters, whether mechanical linkages or electronic switches, engage different gear pairs by sliding sleeves over splines or engaging clutches, changing the path of power flow. In a five-speed transmission, each numbered gear represents a distinct ratio optimised for different operating conditions: low gears deliver raw pulling force at low speeds; high gears allow efficient cruising at reduced engine revolutions per minute. The final drive ratio, found in the differential, applies an additional reduction that is constant across all selected gears.

Overheating and metal fatigue are the primary failures. Gear teeth experience enormous contact stresses and can scuff, spall, or break under shock loads or prolonged misuse. Worn synchronizers in manual boxes cause grinding and difficult shifts. In automatic transmissions, delayed engagement or slipping indicates worn friction plates or hydraulic failure. Debris from worn gear teeth circulates in the lubricant, which is why regular oil analysis catches early damage before catastrophic failure.

The term derives from the Old Norse word meaning a device or tool, but became locked to toothed wheels through centuries of mechanical practice. In broader usage, people speak of gears as individual components, but in transmission terminology, gear always refers to the active ratio state: you are in a gear, not on one. Industrial gearboxes dedicated to fixed tasks use helical, spur, or bevel gear sets tuned to a single ratio rather than multiple selectable gears; they occupy a different design space from automotive transmissions.
