Router: Cutting wood versus wiring chips

A woodworker's router cuts grooves; an electronics designer's router draws invisible paths between components.

To most people, a router is a handheld or table-mounted woodworking tool that spins a bit to cut grooves, edges, and decorative profiles into timber. It is one of the fundamental machines in any carpentry shop. The word itself comes from the verb to rout, meaning to hollow out or to search for something.

In integrated circuit and printed circuit board design, a router is something entirely different: it is an algorithm, not a machine. Once a designer has placed all the active components (transistors, resistors, capacitors) on a board layout, the router automatically computes the paths for all the wires, or traces, that must connect them. The router must obey strict design rules: minimum trace width, minimum spacing between traces to prevent crosstalk, layer assignments, and via placement (the small holes that let signals move between layers of a multi-layer board). A good router finds a solution that fits all these constraints within the physical boundaries of the board.

Modern integrated circuit design relies on autorouters, which perform this task without human intervention. The designer sets the rules, places the components, and the autorouter fills in all the wiring. This is how dense, high-pin-count chips can be physically realized; a human tracing each connection by hand would take months. Early circuit boards were routed by hand, and complex designs were routed semi-automatically with the designer guiding the algorithm.

The two tools share a common root metaphor: both hollow out or carve a path through material. A woodworking router cuts air away from wood to create a channel. A circuit board router calculates a path through available space on a board, avoiding obstacles and obeying rules, leaving a conducting channel behind. Both are named for the act of routing, of finding a way through.

The industrial electronics meaning arose in the 1970s and 1980s as circuit boards became too complex for manual layout. The term router was borrowed from general engineering language (where a router is anything that directs flow from one point to another) and applied to the software that automates trace placement. It has no etymological link to the woodworking tool, though the metaphorical overlap is clear to anyone who understands both domains.
