Motion: from movement to mechanism
In everyday speech, motion means any change of position. On the shop floor, it names the mechanism itself.
To most people, motion is the act of moving. A car in motion travels down the road. A dancer in motion flows across the stage. The word describes the action, the state of being in transit, the physics of displacement over time.
In mechanical engineering, motion names something different: a piece of mechanism, often a linkage or gear train that converts one type of movement into another. On a steam locomotive, a motion is the assembly of rods and cranks that translates the push and pull of the piston into the rotation of the driving wheels. The motion is not the movement itself, but the hardware that creates it. Engineers speak of the valve motion, the walking motion, the gear motion. The component has a name, and that name is motion.
This inversion of meaning arose because engineers needed a word for the device itself, not the action. The mechanism produces motion, yes, but calling it a motion was faster on the shop floor. Related terms like accelerated motion and simple harmonic motion, however, describe the character of the movement that a motion produces, not the physical part. Monkey motion, trade slang for excessive or uncontrolled movement in a mechanism, bridges both senses: it names the unwanted action caused by a faulty motion.
The drift reflects how industrial language borrows ordinary words and anchors them to parts. A bearing is no longer merely something that supports; a motion is no longer merely an action. Once a word attaches to a specific component on a specific machine, it sticks there, even as the word's everyday meaning drifts on.
