Sleeve: From fabric tube to wire joiner

A sleeve wraps your arm or holds fabric together, but in electrical work it twists two wires into permanent contact.

To most people, a sleeve is a tube of fabric attached to a garment, designed to cover the arm or shoulder. The word itself comes from Old English and Germanic roots meaning a strip or piece of cloth. In everyday life, you roll up your sleeves to work, or a shirt sleeve tears at the seam.

In energy and utilities, a sleeve is a copper tube with a very different purpose. Two bare wire ends are inserted into opposite ends of this hollow copper cylinder. When the sleeve is twisted, usually with a special tool or wrench, the copper walls compress and deform around both wire ends simultaneously. This mechanical deformation creates a gas-tight, electrically continuous joint between the wires, known as a McIntire joint. The copper itself becomes part of the electrical circuit, carrying current across the connection point.

The sleeve must be precisely sized to match the wire gauge it joins. Too loose and the wires slip; too tight and the copper may crack before achieving proper grip. The twist action is critical: it must be controlled and complete, rotating the sleeve through a defined arc until the joint seats fully. The resulting connection is permanent and stronger than the wire itself, often used in high-voltage outdoor applications where durability and weather resistance matter.

Both uses share the core metaphor of a tube that holds or joins things. In tailoring, the sleeve holds your arm; in electrical work, the sleeve holds wires. But the garment sleeve is flexible and optional, while the electrical sleeve is rigid and essential to circuit function. The divergence happened as electrical infrastructure developed and required new standards for reliable, weatherproof connections in the field.
