Splice: From joining fabric to joining wires

To splice means to join, but electricians and linemen mean something far more specific: a permanent, conducting connection.

In everyday English, to splice is simply to join two things end-to-end. Film editors splice reels of movie tape together. Rope workers splice rope by interweaving strands. The word carries a sense of neat, skillful joining, often temporary or reversible.

In electrical engineering and industrial electronics, a splice is a junction where two pieces of wire or cable are joined so that electrical current can flow continuously from one to the other. The join must be both mechanically sound, so the wires stay together under tension and vibration, and electrically sound, so resistance at the junction stays low and the connection does not fail under load. A lineman splice or Western Union splice twists each wire tightly around the other in a helical pattern, creating mechanical grip and increasing contact area. A rat-tail splice simply twists the two wire ends together, less formal but faster. Modern electrical work often uses splice tape (a synthetic cured or uncured material wound around the twisted wires) or mechanical sleeves crimped onto the joined ends to seal and protect the joint.

Optical fiber engineering adapted the term for a different purpose. A mechanical splice in fiber optics is a small self-contained assembly that aligns two fiber ends and holds them in precise alignment so light can travel from one fiber to the other with minimal loss. No fusion or welding occurs; the assembly itself, often using precision sleeves and index-matching gel, maintains the optical path.

The shared metaphor across these trades is the joining of two linear elements into one continuous path. In copper wire, that path carries electrons. In rope, it carries tension. In fiber optics, it carries light. Electrical and electronics terminology borrowed the nautical and fiber language because the act of joining two separate runs into one functional unit is mechanically and conceptually the same.
