Torque: From twisting force to the act of rotating
Outside the shop, torque is a force that causes rotation. On the floor, to torque something is to apply that force and make it spin.
In physics and everyday speech, torque is a noun: the rotational equivalent of force, measured in newton-metres or foot-pounds. It describes the turning effect you apply when you twist a wrench or spin a wheel. The word comes from the Latin torquere, meaning to twist.
In mechanical engineering, torque becomes a verb. To torque a fastener means to apply a measured rotational force to it until it reaches a specified value, usually with a torque wrench. A mechanic torques bolts on an engine head to the manufacturer's specification, perhaps 85 newton-metres, ensuring even clamping pressure and proper assembly. The word captures both the action and the control required: you are not simply tightening, but applying a precise amount of rotational work.
This verbal sense appears wherever rotation must be controlled and quantified. When a technician torques a shaft coupling or a fastener on a critical joint, the number matters as much as the action. The torque value becomes part of the work order and the quality record.
The shift from noun to verb reflects the precision demands of modern assembly and maintenance. In general use, you twist something; in the shop, you torque it to a number. The difference is small in words but significant in practice: torque as a verb implies measurement, accountability, and repeatability. Without that sense of applied, controlled rotation, the work is incomplete.
