Tunnel: the mine's straight shot versus the curved underpass
To the public, a tunnel is any passage bored underground. To a miner, it is a precise horizontal cut driven perpendicular to the ore body itself.
In common English, a tunnel is simply a passage dug or bored through rock, earth, or mountain to allow transit from one side to the other. The Channel Tunnel, the Lincoln Tunnel under the Hudson River, a railway bore through the Appalachians, a pedestrian underpass beneath a city street, a bunker access shaft, even a badger's burrow by analogy, all qualify as tunnels. The word does not imply direction, purpose, or method beyond the basic fact of the hole.
In mining, the tunnel is a specific structural element with a technical definition. It is a level passage, meaning horizontal or nearly so, that is driven perpendicular or across the geological structure called the measures, or country rock, the strata of waste material that lie alongside or above the ore vein. The tunnel cuts across these measures in order to reach the vein itself. Once the working has reached the vein, the miner stops driving the tunnel and instead opens a drift or gangway, which is a passage driven along the length of the vein to extract ore. The tunnel is the approach; the drift is the workplace.
The distinction assumes a vertical or steeply angled ore body. A vein of coal, copper, or tin does not necessarily run parallel to the surface. The measures may dip or stand at an angle. To reach a vein that lies deep or offset beneath the hillside, the miner must drive a level tunnel perpendicular to the strike of the vein, boring through the waste rock until the face breaks into ore. Only then does work shift to the drift, which follows the profitable material.
The word tunnel carries this directional precision nowhere else in English. A road tunnel, a water tunnel, a sewer tunnel, an air intake tunnel in a factory, even a mine shaft collar, do not invoke the perpendicularity or the crossing of geological strata. The mining definition is old and technical, rooted in the specific geometry of coal and metal extraction in Britain and Europe, where it was recorded in mining dictionaries by the 18th century. The term clarifies a critical moment in the work: the end of approach, the start of winning.
