Via: the tiny bridge in your circuit

To most people, via means by way of. To electronics engineers, it's a microscopic hole that lets electricity jump between layers.

In everyday speech, via is a preposition. You send a message via email, you travel via train. It means by way of, by means of, through. The word comes from Latin and simply names a path or route.

In printed circuit board manufacturing, a via is something concrete and physical: a small hole drilled or chemically etched through the laminated layers of the board, then plated with conductive metal, usually copper. The hole is typically anywhere from 0.1 millimeters to a few millimeters in diameter, depending on the design rules of the factory. Its job is to carry electrical current from a trace on one layer of the board to a trace on another layer below or above it. Without vias, each layer would be electrically isolated.

The term applies equally to integrated circuits, where vias serve the same purpose: they connect metal layers within the chip itself. In IC design, vias are so small that they are measured in microns, and the density and placement of them directly affects how much functionality can be packed into the silicon.

The metaphor is plain. A via is a way through, a route, a passage, just as the Latin word suggests. But where the everyday sense is abstract and figurative, the industrial sense is literal and measurable. The electrical current takes a via from one layer to the next, just as a traveler takes a via from one place to another. The word borrowed its Latin origin to describe a manufacturing need: a small opening that lets the signal through.
