ASIC

Core networking/electronics term, precise technical definition

Aplication Specific Integrated Circuit. An integrated circuit designed to perform one particular function very quickly.

In networking hardware such as switches: a hardware chip that determines what port to forward data to. An ASIC can forward packets at line speed because it works only on that single task.
