An 8x8 vehicle has eight wheels, with power delivered to all eight simultaneously. The notation describes both the total wheel count and the number of driven axles: eight wheels total, eight wheels powered. This differs fundamentally from conventional trucks, where only some wheels receive torque from the engine. In an 8x8, each wheel is connected to the drivetrain, typically through portal axles, transfer cases, or hub reduction systems that distribute engine power equally or nearly equally across all contact points with the road or terrain.
These vehicles are purpose-built for extreme conditions: deep mud, snow, sand, and steep grades where conventional six or ten-wheel trucks cannot maintain traction. Military logistics, arctic supply runs, heavy equipment recovery, and disaster relief operations rely on 8x8s because redundancy across eight driven wheels means that loss of traction on one or two wheels does not immobilize the vehicle. Construction and Variants

The 8x8 sits at the extreme end of all-terrain vehicle design. It sacrifices speed, efficiency, and road manners for the ability to traverse terrain that stops all other wheeled vehicles.
