The front seat is any seating position in the forward compartment of a vehicle, ahead of the front axle line. In most passenger cars, this means two positions: the driver's seat (left side in left-hand traffic, right side in right-hand traffic) and the front passenger seat. Commercial vehicles and large trucks may have bench seating that accommodates three or more occupants across the front, though modern designs trend toward narrower cabs with single or dual individual seats.

Front seats differ fundamentally from rear seating in their structural relationship to crash dynamics and safety systems. The front passenger seat must accommodate the airbag deployment zone, typically requiring minimum clearance from the dashboard. Front seats receive direct mounting to the vehicle frame via reinforced brackets; this rigid attachment contrasts with rear seats, which often mount to floor pans with less structural integration. The driver's seat includes mechanical adjustment systems for reach and recline, while passenger seats may offer manual or power adjustment depending on vehicle class.

Variants and Construction

Front seats come in three primary material families: all-fabric upholstery (common in economy vehicles), leather or leather-like synthetic (mid to premium market), and specialty materials like suede blends or technical fabrics in high-performance vehicles. The seat structure itself uses high-carbon steel or aluminum frames, with foam padding (typically polyurethane at densities between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds per cubic foot) layered over the springs. Lumbar support mechanisms, heated elements, and massage functions are increasingly standard in mid-range vehicles and above.

Wear patterns on front seats follow predictable routes: the outer bolster on the driver's side experiences the most abrasion from entry and exit, while the sitting surface degrades from repeated compression cycles over 150,000 to 200,000 miles of typical use. Creasing, cloth pilling, and leather cracking are common failure modes. Professional reconditioning typically involves foam restoration, re-stitching of seams, and leather repair or replacement of cover panels rather than full seat replacement.

Front seat positioning is regulated by safety standards in most markets. In North America, seat belt anchorages and airbag zones are defined by FMVSS standards; European vehicles follow ECE regulations. The front passenger seat must not obstruct the driver's sightlines to mirrors and traffic, a constraint that influences seat height and headrest design. Legacy terminology sometimes distinguishes the driver's seat as the operator's seat and the front passenger seat as the front bench or front companion seat, though these terms have largely fallen from modern technical use.
