Abt system

The Abt system is a rack and pinion railway designed for routes too steep for conventional adhesion between wheel and rail. Instead of relying on friction alone, a toothed rack rail runs between the two running rails, and a pinion gear mounted on the locomotive engages this rack to haul the train up inclines of 1 in 4 or steeper. The system was invented by Roman Abt, a Swiss engineer, in the 1880s and remains the most widely used rack system on mountain railways worldwide.

What makes the Abt system distinctive is its use of multiple independent cograils rather than a single rack. Typically two or three cograils are arranged in parallel, each with its own teeth offset from the others. A locomotive carries corresponding pinions that engage all cograils simultaneously. This redundancy is critical for safety: if one cograil tooth breaks or wears, the pinions remain engaged with the others, preventing derailment or loss of traction on exposed mountain terrain.

The teeth are usually cast or forged steel and cut at an angle so that the pinion gears mesh smoothly and efficiently. Rack rail is heavier and more expensive to manufacture and maintain than standard rail, and the cograils wear faster than running rails because they bear the full braking load on descent. Mountain railways using the Abt system must budget for regular rack replacement, often every 15 to 25 years depending on traffic intensity and maintenance practices.

Operational characteristics and limitations

Abt locomotives are purpose-built, usually small and heavy for their power rating because they must be stable on steep grades and carry substantial braking equipment. Speeds are low, typically between 10 and 20 kilometers per hour, and the system is sensitive to ice or snow accumulation in the rack teeth, which can cause slipping and loss of grip. For this reason, routes with heavy winter weather often include heated cogs or mechanical scrapers.

The Abt system competes with the Riggenbach and Strub systems for steep mountain work, but its redundant cograil design has made it the industry standard for passenger and freight railways in the Alps, Pyrenees, and other major ranges. Narrow-gauge and standard-gauge versions exist, and the system has been adapted to both steam and modern diesel or electric locomotives, though electric traction is now preferred for environmental and operational reasons.
