A reefer is a railroad boxcar equipped with mechanical or ice-based refrigeration to transport perishable cargo over long distances. Built to the standard boxcar envelope, roughly 40 to 50 feet long, it maintains controlled temperatures inside an insulated cargo hold, allowing fresh produce, meat, dairy, and other temperature-sensitive freight to survive multi-day journeys across the continent.
Early reefers, dating from the late 19th century, relied on blocks of ice loaded into bunkers at either end of the car; attendants replaced the ice at icing stations along the route. By the mid-20th century, mechanical refrigeration units powered by diesel generators or by tapping auxiliary power from the locomotive began replacing ice-based systems. Mechanical reefers offered more precise temperature control, typically holding 32 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit depending on cargo type, and eliminated the labor and waste of ice management.
How reefers fit the railroad network
These cars became essential infrastructure for agriculture and food distribution. Peach crops from Georgia, lettuce from California, frozen beef from the Midwest, and butter from Wisconsin all depended on reefer fleets. A railroad typically operated hundreds of these cars in a rotating pool, dispatched based on seasonal demand and commodity flows. They required dedicated cleaning facilities and regular maintenance of insulation and refrigeration plant.The term "reefer" comes directly from the refrigeration function: short for "refrigerator car." Rail crews and dispatchers still used the term colloquially even as the technology evolved. The car sits somewhere between a common boxcar and a tank car in terms of specialization, occupying its own niche in consist planning and loading protocols.
Reefer traffic declined sharply after the 1960s as trucking improved and containers allowed intermodal transport of chilled goods. Many railroads retired mechanical reefers by the 1980s. Today, reefers survive mainly on specialty routes and in heritage operations, though some Class I railways maintain small fleets for specific contracts. The economics of reefer ownership, maintenance, and routing ultimately could not compete with over-the-road refrigerated trailers.
