An additive (often a separate product) that enhances the efficacy of a pesticide, but has little or no pesticidal effect itself.

An adjuvant is a chemical additive mixed into a pesticide tank to improve how well the active ingredient performs. It has no direct killing power of its own, but changes the physical or chemical behavior of the spray in ways that increase coverage, absorption, or persistence on the target plant or pest. Common adjuvants reduce surface tension, slow evaporation, improve adhesion to waxy leaf surfaces, or buffer pH swings that degrade certain herbicides.

The main categories are surfactants, which break the water's surface tension and help the spray wet and spread across foliage; oils and oil concentrates, which enhance penetration and reduce rain-off; drift control agents, which coarsen spray droplets to prevent fine mist from drifting off-target; and pH buffers, which stabilize acidic or alkaline tank mixes. Some adjuvants are supplied as separate products that the operator mixes in at the time of application; others are already formulated into the pesticide product itself as "built-in" adjuvants.

Performance and practical use

A surfactant-based adjuvant can increase herbicide efficacy by 10 to 30 percent simply by improving leaf wetting and contact time. This matters most with post-emergent herbicides sprayed on mature weeds with thick, waxy cuticles. Oil-based adjuvants are especially critical for insecticides targeting soft-bodied pests; without them, the spray may not penetrate the waxy bloom on an aphid or mite. Drift control adjuvants become essential in windy conditions or when spraying near sensitive crops, as they can reduce drift losses from 20 to 40 percent down to 5 to 10 percent.

Application rate and type of adjuvant must match the pesticide and the target. Adding too much surfactant can cause phytotoxicity on tender foliage or in high heat. Water quality matters: hard water can interact poorly with some adjuvants, and alkaline water will degrade certain herbicides unless a pH buffer is included. Tank mixing order is important; surfactants and oils are typically added to the spray tank before the pesticide to avoid separation or chemical breakdown.

The word comes from Latin "adjuvare," meaning to help or assist. In practical terms, adjuvants are where the science of spray technology meets economics: a cheap adjuvant can reduce the required pesticide rate or improve coverage on difficult targets, cutting input costs per acre while maintaining efficacy. This is why most commercial spray operations, especially large-scale agriculture, rely on adjuvant selection as part of their pest management strategy rather than simply increasing the active ingredient rate.
