aerobatics

The practice of flying maneuvers involving aircraft attitudes that are not used in conventional passenger-carrying flights.

Aerobatics: extreme attitudes and G-forces that expose hidden damage

Aerobatics describes intentional flight outside normal envelope: sustained inverted flight, vertical climbs, spins, rolls, and maneuvers that can pull 6, 8, or 10 positive or negative G-forces. A Cessna 172 flies level at perhaps 1.5 G in a turn; a Pitts S-2B aerobatic biplane is certified to +6 G and -3 G. These attitudes, where fuselage, wing roots, and control surfaces experience forces they were never designed to tolerate in normal service, demand specialized maintenance and inspection.

For maintenance crews, aerobatics means hunting for damage that standard passenger-flight operations would never reveal. Rivets pull and crack under sustained negative G. Wing attachments fatigue. Fuel system components designed for 1 G behave unpredictably under inversion. Control cables stretch. Airframes approved for aerobatic use (marked in type certificates, not retrofit) must be inspected to stricter tolerances and shorter inspection intervals than equivalent unpressurized aircraft. A small crack in a wing spar, invisible on a trainer, becomes catastrophic under a 6 G pullout.

The aircraft themselves are purpose-built or heavily modified. Aerobatic types have reinforced fuselages, symmetrical or inverted airfoils, negative-G fuel and oil systems (with inverted carburetors or fuel injection), and control surfaces mass-balanced to prevent flutter. Wings are often strut-braced biplane or monoplane layouts with external bracing, not cantilever designs. Spin training aircraft add spin-recovery parachutes. Competition aerobatic aircraft are single-seat, all-metal or composite, with G-limits sometimes exceeding 10.

Where the term lives in the trade

Aerobatics inspection falls to specialized shops and certified inspection personnel, often those with military background or aerobatic competition experience. The work includes borescope inspection of internal wing structure, non-destructive testing (NDT) of fasteners, and teardown examination of control surface hinges and cables. Regulatory approval depends on aircraft type certificate limitations: not all aircraft can legally perform aerobatics, even with an experienced pilot.

In flight schools and training operations, aerobatics is a separate discipline from normal flight instruction. Aerobatic trainers, Decathlons, Christen Eagles, Zlin Zeniths, and older military types, are maintained separately from the general fleet. Their logbooks track G-force history, often by flight-test or telemetry data, and components are retired at lower hours than equivalent conventional aircraft.
