Agribulk refers to agricultural products shipped loose and unpacked in massive volumes, typically millions of tonnes per year across global trade routes. Grains like wheat, corn, and barley make up the bulk of this category, along with oilseeds, raw sugar, and dry fertilizers. These commodities flow from inland silos and farm storage into specialized vessels and are discharged directly into port silos or customer storage without bagging or containerization.

The economics of agribulk depend entirely on scale and speed of handling. A single Panamax bulk carrier holds around 65,000 to 75,000 tonnes of grain. Port infrastructure built for agribulk includes ship loaders, leg conveyor systems, and shore-based storage towers designed to move 1,000 to 2,000 tonnes per hour. The cost per tonne drops dramatically as throughput increases, which is why agribulk shippers consolidate cargo and avoid break-bulk handling at all costs.

Moisture and contamination are the primary enemies of agribulk cargo. Grain absorbs water from humid air or rain exposure, developing mold and reducing market grade; wheat destined for flour mills typically arrives at 12 to 14 percent moisture content. Cross-contamination during discharge (peanut dust in a silo previously used for wheat, for example) can render entire shipments unmarketable or trigger customer rejection. Ship operators use certified cleaning procedures between loads and maintain detailed segregation records.

Handling and logistics

Agribulk moves through a network of bulk carriers, self-discharging vessels, barges, and rail hoppers. Inland waterways carry significant volume in grain-rich regions like the US Midwest and the Danube basin; ocean-going bulk carriers then transport consolidated shipments to importing countries. Port selection is critical: specialized grain terminals in ports like Rotterdam, Buenos Aires, and the US Gulf offer the fastest discharge times and lowest demurrage costs, while general-purpose bulk ports may lack the infrastructure and can cost weeks in delays.

The term itself emerged from shipping and port management vocabulary, distinguishing this class of cargo from containerized agricultural goods, break-bulk breakdowns, and project cargo. Agribulk operations are highly seasonal, peaking after harvest in major grain regions and creating intense competition for vessel berths and terminal space. Prices and freight rates for agribulk commodities are quoted separately from other bulk cargoes because handling, storage, and contamination risks differ markedly.
