In marine work, to bend means to fasten one rope to another rope, or to secure a rope or chain to a fitting such as a cleat, ring, or anchor shackle. The term describes the knot itself and the act of tying it. A bent line will not slip under load, unlike a casual wrap or hitch. In shipyards and on vessels, bending is one of the foundational skills: a poorly bent line can fail under tension, putting crew and cargo at risk.
Different jobs call for different bends. The most common is the clove hitch, used to secure a line to a rail or spar; it tightens under load and holds firmly in two directions. A bowline creates a fixed loop that will not slip, essential when rigging blocks or securing a mooring pennant. An anchor bend (also called a fisherman's bend) joins a rope to the ring or shackle of an anchor, with an extra turn that prevents the line from working loose during retrieval or in rough seas. Heavy chains are bent to anchors using shackles and mousing wires, not knots.
The strength of a bent line depends on both knot type and the quality of rope. Natural fiber rope (manila, cotton) grips better than some synthetics, but modern three-strand nylon and polyester lines hold bends reliably if tied correctly. Wet rope and frozen rope require extra care; ice can cause a poorly tensioned bend to creep. On working decks, a line that has bent and slipped under load will have abraded fibers and a glazed appearance at the failure point.
Why the term "bend" rather than "tie" or "knot"? The word is old maritime language, recorded in nautical manuals from the 17th century onward. It survives in phrases like "bend a line to a cleat" and "bend fast," and appears in the names of specific knots: bowline, clove hitch, rolling hitch, and anchor bend. The term also extends to the rope or chain itself after it has been fastened, as in "check all bends before departure." Sailmakers and riggers still use "bend" to mean attaching a sail to a spar or line, a usage that traces back to working square-rigged ships.
In practice, a shipyard worker or deckhand learns to inspect bent lines regularly. UV exposure weakens natural fibers, salt water corrodes metal hardware, and repeated flexing at the knot point causes wear. A bend that held under calm conditions may slip when shock loads arrive during storm conditions or emergency maneuvers. Chafe at the bend point is common on vessels that work in confined harbors or alongside piers, making the choice of knot type a practical decision based on the expected stresses and the materials at hand.
