An air admittance vent, also called a studor vent or AAV, is a one-way mechanical valve installed on a drainage line to allow air into the pipe system while blocking sewer gases from escaping into the building. It solves a real problem: water flowing down a drain needs air to rush in behind it, otherwise the water column creates a vacuum that slows drainage and can siphon water out of traps. Where a full vent stack running to the roof is impractical or impossible, an AAV lets the system draw interior air through its spring-loaded internal flapper instead.
The mechanism is simple but critical. Inside the plastic or brass body sits a float valve with a rubber gasket. When water flows down the drain, it reduces pressure in the line, and the lower pressure pulls the float down, cracking open the valve to admit air. As soon as pressure normalizes or sewer gases push upward, the float rises and the gasket seals tight, blocking any backflow or odor escape. Most units are rated to handle flows between 15 and 45 gallons per minute depending on size, with 1.5-inch and 2-inch models being standard for residential branch lines and 3-inch versions for main stacks.
Installation location matters. The vent must be placed on the drain line as high as possible, ideally within 6 inches of the trap outlet, and always above the spillover rim of any fixture it serves. It cannot be submerged or exposed to standing water, which would jam the float and break the seal. Building codes typically permit one AAV per separate drain line or in some cases one AAV serving multiple fixtures on the same branch, though code varies by jurisdiction and some areas restrict their use entirely, requiring conventional vents instead.
Wear and failure modes
The rubber gasket wears over time and can fail, allowing sewer odors to leak past. Mineral deposits and scale buildup can prevent the float from moving freely, particularly in areas with hard water. Lint, grease, or other debris drawn in with the intake air can clog the valve. Once failed, the unit cannot be field-repaired and must be replaced as an assembly. Lifespan is typically 10 to 20 years depending on usage and maintenance of upstream traps.
AAVs are cheaper and faster to install than cutting through roof framing for a traditional vent stack, which is why they appear in many retrofit jobs and tight building situations. However, they are not approved in all jurisdictions and some plumbing inspectors distrust them. They work best in systems with good trap priming and regular use; dormant drains or those with tricky trap geometry can lead to air-lock problems that even an AAV cannot fully solve.
