A needle valve is a small-orifice valve that restricts flow through a tapered, needle-shaped plunger (the stem) that seats against a conical opening. As you turn the handwheel or knob, the stem advances or retracts in fine increments, opening or closing the passage by fractions of a turn. This geometry gives extraordinary control over low flow rates, typically measured in gallons per hour rather than gallons per minute.

The valve body is usually brass or stainless steel, with port sizes ranging from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch, though smaller sizes are more common. The stem threads have a relatively fine pitch, often 40 or 50 threads per inch, so a single full turn moves the needle only 0.020 to 0.025 inches. This mechanical advantage makes it nearly impossible to accidentally shut off a needle valve suddenly, preventing water hammer and pressure spikes in sensitive systems.

Common Applications and Variants

Needle valves appear wherever precision metering is needed: instrument panel gauges, compressed air tools, laboratory gas supplies, refrigeration systems, and carburetor fuel jets. Angle-body needle valves have inlet and outlet ports at 90 degrees to each other, easing installation in tight spaces. Straight-body versions align ports in line. Some designs incorporate a shut-off ball valve or integral check valve for additional control or backflow prevention.

A key limitation is that needle valves are not designed to handle bulk flow or serve as isolation valves. The narrow opening clogs easily if the system carries sediment or scale; a small piece of debris can jam the needle in open or closed position. Most plumbing installations include a strainer upstream to protect the valve, and isolation ball valves on either side for servicing.

The name is literal and traditional: the stern resembles a needle. In high-pressure hydraulic systems, similar function is provided by cartridge or poppet valves with electronic control, but the mechanical needle valve remains standard in low-pressure liquid and gas systems where simplicity, cost, and reliability outweigh the need for remote actuation.
