An all-figure number is a telephone number composed entirely of numeric digits, with no alphabetic characters. In North America, this became the standard format following the transition from mixed alphanumeric exchange codes to the modern ten-digit numbering plan. The shift began in the 1960s as dial switching systems became capable of handling purely numeric input and as telephone traffic grew too dense for the old letter-prefixed scheme to function efficiently.

Before all-figure numbers, exchange names were abbreviated to letters on the telephone dial. A New York number might read as MUrray Hill 4-5678, where the caller dialed the first two letters (M and U) plus the remaining digits. This system worked for networks with hundreds of exchanges, but it imposed a constraint: the first letter of each exchange had to correspond to one of eight keys (2 through 9) on the rotary dial. Letters Q and Z were not assigned. As cities expanded and required more exchanges than this alphabetic scheme could support, the numeric system became necessary.

The ten-digit format

The standardized all-figure number in North America contains ten digits: a three-digit area code, a three-digit exchange code, and a four-digit line number. This was formalized as the North American Numbering Plan. The area code indicates the region; the exchange code identifies a local switch or serving office; the line number reaches the individual subscriber. Early all-figure numbers sometimes used seven digits within a local area, requiring users to dial the area code only when calling long distance. Many systems now require the full ten digits for all calls, local and long distance alike.

The elimination of letters removed a mnemonic advantage: MUrray Hill was easier to remember and spell than 688. However, all-figure numbers solved a critical technical problem. Rotary dial electromechanical switches interpreted digits as pulse sequences; numeric-only addressing was faster and more reliable than the hybrid system. Push-button (DTMF) phones could send digits and letters, but the switching infrastructure standardized on numerics alone. This made numbering predictable, scalable, and compatible across the continent.

The term 'all-figure' distinguished these numbers sharply from the exchange-name style. In industry literature and telephone company documentation from the 1960s and 1970s, the transition was often referred to as the shift from 'name and number' to 'all-figure' dialing. By the 1980s, the older system had nearly disappeared in major cities, though some rural exchanges retained letter prefixes longer. Today, the ten-digit all-figure number is so universal that the term itself has become historical, used mainly by engineers and historians discussing the technology's evolution.
