Alignment is the physical line that a road, railway, or other linear infrastructure follows across terrain. It is defined by a series of points and curves plotted on a survey, then staked out and constructed in the field. The alignment determines how much earth must be moved, how many structures must be built, and ultimately how much a project will cost and how well it will perform.

Every alignment is a compromise between competing demands. A straight line between two points covers distance efficiently but may require expensive cuts through hills or fills across valleys. A curved alignment that follows the contours of the land reduces earthwork but adds distance and may create sight-line problems for drivers or sight-distance issues for rail operations. Designers balance gradient (the slope of the route), curvature (horizontal bends), and elevation changes against budget, safety requirements, and land acquisition constraints.

The term carries different weight depending on the infrastructure type. For roads, alignment refers to both the horizontal path (the planimetric line when viewed from above) and the vertical profile (the elevation changes along that path). Railway alignment is more restrictive: maximum gradients are typically 2 to 4 percent, and horizontal curves must have much longer radii than road curves, sometimes 1000 meters or more. Pipeline and utility alignments are often constrained by property boundaries and the need to avoid existing buried services.

Misalignment or poor alignment choices create persistent problems. A road alignment that cuts too steeply across a hillside may destabilize slopes and cause washouts. A railway alignment with insufficient sight distance at curves delays signal systems and reduces safe operating speeds. An alignment chosen without proper survey data wastes money during construction when hidden rock or water requires rework. Conversely, over-designed alignment that follows the easiest possible path may be longer and more expensive than necessary.

The word derives from the act of lining things up: to align means to place in a line. In surveying and civil engineering, alignment became the standard term for the spatial definition of linear projects, distinct from the design elements like pavement thickness or rail gauge that sit atop that line. Modern alignment work uses GPS, laser theodolites, and digital design software, but the fundamental task remains unchanged: marking the ground with precision so that construction crews can build along the intended route.
