An annunciator is an electromechanical signalling device installed in a signal box that produces an audible alert when a train passes over a treadle, a pressure-sensitive contact embedded in the track. The treadle closes an electrical circuit as the wheels roll across it, energising a solenoid that actuates a buzzer or bell. This gives the signaller immediate, physical confirmation that a train has entered a section of track, well before it reaches the signal box itself.
The device gets its name from the Latin annuntiare, to announce: it literally announces the arrival or passage of a train. In a busy signal box, the annunciator serves as a critical aide to human attention, cutting through the noise and visual complexity of lever frames, telegraph instruments, and track diagrams. A seasoned signaller learns to read the timing and character of each annunciator, sharp click, dull thud, rapid chatter, to judge the weight and speed of an approaching train.
Treadles are positioned at fixed points along the line, typically 200 to 400 yards before a signal box, or at specific locations that demand early warning: junctions, steep gradients, or approaches to occupied sections. Each treadle connects via buried cable to its own annunciator, so a signal box may have several buzzer units arrayed along a shelf, each labelled to show which section or route it monitors. Older installations used mechanical strikers striking a bell; later versions used electromagnetic buzzers or solenoid chimes.
Reliability and failure modes
The treadle itself is the weak point. Dirt, ice, or rail wear can prevent reliable contact, or the pressure threshold can drift with age. A failed treadle leaves the signaller blind to a train’s approach until visual sighting, a hazard on poorly sighted lines or in poor weather. Corrosion of the buried cable, usually caused by water ingress at the treadle housing, is common after ten to twenty years of service.Annunciators have been largely superseded by electronic track circuits and modern signalling systems that display train position on a screen and generate computerised alerts. However, they remain in use on heritage railways, on some heritage-listed signal boxes, and in shunting yards where their simplicity and directness suit the work. The device represents a threshold in railway automation: mechanical enough to work reliably with basic maintenance, yet sophisticated enough to extend human senses to the track.
