A running shed is a maintenance facility where locomotives are inspected, refueled, watered, and made ready for their next revenue service. Unlike a locomotive works or heavy repair shop, a running shed handles day-to-day upkeep and emergency fixes, not frame rebuilds or boiler overhauls. The building typically contains multiple roads (parallel tracks) under a large roof, allowing several engines to be worked on simultaneously while protected from weather.

The core function is turnaround maintenance. After a locomotive returns from a journey, shed staff ash out the firebox, replenish water and coal or oil, inspect brake systems and running gear, and check steam and fuel lines for leaks or damage. On steam locomotives, this means disposing of clinker and ash that accumulates in the box, a job requiring several hours. Diesel locomotives need fuel topped up, oil checked, and mechanical systems examined. The shed is equipped with water columns (or hydrants), coal stages, ash pits, and pit roads so workers can access underneath the engine safely.

A typical running shed for a medium-sized depot might have four to eight roads, a small workshop area with benches and hand tools, and storage for replacement components like injectors, gauges, and small fittings. The shed master oversees the operation. Cleaning crews, firemen, and fitters work the shifts, often following a roster that mirrors locomotive working hours. Some sheds operated on a 24-hour basis to support night services. Larger railway networks maintained multiple running sheds spread across their territory to minimize dead mileage (running light).

The building itself is usually a long, single-story steel or brick structure with a roof height of around 20 to 25 feet to clear chimney smoke on steam engines. Ventilation is critical because coal smoke and diesel exhaust accumulate rapidly. Natural draft through large side vents and roof openings was common on older sheds; later installations added mechanical extraction. The floor is typically concrete or ash, graded to drain water away from the pit roads.

Running sheds sit in the middle of the railway maintenance hierarchy. Light repairs and adjustments happen here; major work goes to the works. A broken steam injector might be swapped at the shed. A cracked boiler tube triggers a trip to the works for tube replacement. This distinction kept turnaround times short and reserved heavy equipment and skilled craftsmen for jobs that genuinely needed them. The shed staff became expert at rapid diagnosis and quick fixes, learning which faults could be patched to get an engine back in service within hours.
