antisagging: paint that doesn't run down vertical surfaces

Antisagging describes a coating's resistance to flowing downward under its own weight after application. When paint, varnish, or powder coating is sprayed or brushed onto a vertical or sloped surface, gravity pulls it downward; without antisagging properties, the wet film develops visible drips, runs, and irregular thickness. Antisagging formulations maintain their position during the critical wet period before curing begins.

The mechanism involves rheology, the flow behavior of liquids. Coating formulators achieve antisagging by raising the paint's viscosity at rest while keeping it fluid enough to flow smoothly during application. This is typically done using thickening agents such as fumed silica, bentonite clay, or synthetic polymers that create a pseudo-plastic or thixotropic effect. The paint is stiff when undisturbed but thins when agitated by brush, roller, or spray equipment, then re-thickens as it settles on the surface.

This property becomes critical in vertical spray applications, particularly in automotive refinish work, industrial equipment coating, and architectural finishes on large vertical panels. A coating that sags will produce an uneven surface, waste material, and require remedial sanding and recoating. In powder coating, antisagging is managed differently through charge and flow characteristics rather than rheological additives, since powder does not flow like liquid until it melts during cure.

The term arose from practical jobsite language describing the visible defect itself, not from marketing terminology. Workers and inspectors simply call poor sagging resistance a "saggy" finish, making antisagging the natural inverse descriptor. Specifications for automotive and architectural coatings routinely include antisagging performance requirements, typically measured by spraying at a standard angle and measuring vertical flow distance after a set time.
