antitranspirant: chemical film that locks water into leaves

An antitranspirant is a spray coating, usually polymer-based or wax-based, that reduces water loss through the stomata and cuticle of plant leaves. It works by forming a thin, breathable membrane on leaf surfaces that slows evaporative water loss while still allowing gas exchange and photosynthesis to continue. The coating does not close stomata mechanically; instead, it increases the diffusion resistance of water vapor movement through the leaf boundary layer.

Common formulations include film-forming polymers such as acrylic latex, vinyl acetate homopolymers, or natural wax emulsions. Some products combine these base materials with antioxidants, UV stabilizers, and penetrating oils to improve adhesion and durability. The active ingredient concentration typically ranges from 15% to 35% by volume, with coverage rates of 1 to 3 gallons per acre depending on leaf density and application method.

Practical applications and limitations

Antitranspirants are applied by foliar spray during drought stress, transplanting shock, or environmental conditions that accelerate water loss, such as high wind or low humidity. They are most effective on woody plants, nursery stock, and newly seeded turf. The coating degrades over 4 to 8 weeks through weathering and new leaf growth, so reapplication is necessary for sustained protection. Effectiveness varies with species; deciduous trees show more benefit than conifers, and herbaceous plants often benefit least.

The film can reduce light penetration slightly and may cause cosmetic residue on foliage, making it unsuitable for display plantings or produce destined for fresh market sales. Under extreme conditions, the coating may trap heat or trap pathogens if applied during fungal pressure. Application during cool, low-light hours and avoidance of product combinations with sulfur or oil-based pesticides reduces these risks.

The term derives from the Latin prefix anti-, meaning against, and transpirant, referring to transpiration, the physiological process by which plants lose water through leaf surfaces. Antitranspirants are distinct from stomatal closure agents or growth regulators; they function as physical barriers rather than metabolic interventions.
