autogain: electronics that turn themselves up when things get quiet

Autogain is a circuit or control system that automatically adjusts the amplification of an electrical signal to maintain a relatively constant output level, regardless of input strength. Rather than requiring manual intervention every time an input source varies, autogain senses the incoming signal amplitude and increases or decreases gain accordingly, holding the output within a target range.

The mechanism relies on feedback: a portion of the output signal is measured, compared against a reference voltage or threshold, and the result drives a variable gain amplifier (usually a voltage-controlled amplifier or VCA). When input drops, the circuit increases gain; when input rises above the target, it reduces gain. The speed of this adjustment, called the attack and release time, determines how quickly the circuit responds to changes and how smooth the result sounds or appears.

Autogain appears across many industrial applications. In audio systems, microphone preamplifiers use autogain (often called automatic gain control or AGC) to handle speakers at varying distances without the engineer constantly riding a fader. In telecommunications, autogain compensates for signal loss over long cable runs or radio links. Test and measurement instruments employ it to keep detector outputs readable across a wide input range without saturation or noise floor loss.

Common problems and limitations

Autogain circuits can hunt or oscillate if the attack and release times are poorly tuned, causing the output to flutter or pump audibly. Fast attack times preserve signal dynamics but can clip peaks; slow attack times avoid clipping but allow transient overshoot. Autogain also cannot distinguish between desired signal and interference, so it will amplify noise if the input falls silent and background noise is all that remains. In radio applications, this effect is called noise pumping.

The term itself combines automatic with gain, the standard electronics term for amplification ratio. Autogain became standard industrial vocabulary as analog integrated circuits made the function cheap and reliable enough to include in consumer and professional equipment by the 1970s. Modern implementations often use digital feedback loops and microcontroller logic, offering finer control and the ability to meter attack and release in milliseconds with precision.
