WideUltra SCSI

A cross between the Ultra SCSI and Wide SCSI interfaces which uses a 16-bit bus.

WideUltra SCSI: 16-bit data path at 20 MHz clock speed

WideUltra SCSI combines two separate SCSI enhancements into a single interface standard. It uses a 16-bit data bus, which doubles the parallel lines of the Wide SCSI standard from 8 bits to 16 bits, while running at the 20 MHz clock speed of Ultra SCSI. This produces a maximum theoretical throughput of 40 megabytes per second, double that of either parent standard alone.

The 16-bit bus requires a wider connector than the original 50-pin SCSI. WideUltra SCSI typically uses an 68-pin connector, sometimes called a P-cable or high-density connector in industrial applications. The additional pins carry the extra data lines and their corresponding ground returns, which become critical at higher clock speeds to maintain signal integrity and minimize crosstalk between adjacent conductors.

Practical deployment and limitations

WideUltra SCSI saw use primarily in the late 1990s for high-performance storage systems, particularly in server environments and industrial data acquisition equipment. It allowed substantial data movement without requiring the copper costs and complexity of switching to early Fibre Channel systems. However, the specification proved sensitive to cable length and termination quality; runs longer than 3 meters became unreliable, and improper termination could cause signal reflections that corrupted data.

The name reflects its genealogy straightforwardly: it is the Wide variant of Ultra SCSI, introduced after both parent technologies had established themselves. By the early 2000s, Fast and Ultra2 SCSI variants, along with emerging SAS and Fibre Channel systems, had displaced WideUltra SCSI from new designs. However, legacy industrial equipment and archived documentation still reference it, particularly in process control and measurement systems built during the late 1990s.

Technicians working with older equipment containing WideUltra SCSI interfaces should be aware that cable degradation and connector corrosion are common failure modes. Replacement cables for this standard are increasingly difficult to source, making preventive maintenance and proper storage conditions more important than retrofit or upgrade.
