B-unit

A locomotive with an engine, generator, and traction motors, but without a control cab.

B-unit: the engine car that needs a pilot.

A B-unit is a locomotive powered by its own diesel engine and electrical generation system, but fitted with no operator's cab. It exists solely to provide additional pulling power and must be coupled to an A-unit, which carries the controls and crew compartment. On a freight consist, the B-unit runs directly behind or ahead of the A-unit, drawing electrical power from the lead locomotive's control lines and responding to throttle commands sent through the consist.

The B-unit became standard equipment in American freight railroads during the 1940s and 1950s, when operators discovered that adding cabless locomotives to an A-unit gave them more horsepower without proportional increases in weight or crew. A single A-unit diesel could haul a 10,000-ton coal drag alone, but adding a B-unit or even two B-units in distributed power configuration allowed the same crew to move 20,000 tons or more. Electro-Motive Division, Alco, and Baldwin all manufactured B-units, with the EMD models being the most widespread.

The electrical architecture of the B-unit differs fundamentally from the A-unit. Where an A-unit contains its own control desk, operator's seat, and pneumatic lines for the independent brake valve, the B-unit has no such equipment. Instead, control signals travel from the A-unit through multi-pin connectors along a consist cable that couples the units together. The engineer in the A-unit manipulates a single throttle handle that alters the field current to every traction motor on every unit in the consist, causing all engines to respond in synchronization.

Why B-units fell from favor

By the 1970s, most Class I railroads stopped buying B-units and instead purchased second and third A-units, which offered cab-forward operation. A two-unit consist with two cabs gave dispatchers flexibility: either unit could lead, and the crew could operate in either direction without turning around. B-unit fleets required careful consist management, and when a B-unit needed repair, breaking up an established pair often proved inefficient. Radiator and fuel-tank designs also made B-units less suitable for high-adhesion mountain grades where independent braking mattered.

Most B-units are now retired or scrapped, though some remained in active service on shortline railroads and switching operations into the 1990s. Preserved examples survive in museum consists, usually coupled behind a restored A-unit exactly as they ran in revenue service. The term B-unit, though rare in modern dispatching, survives in roster books and engineering documentation as a specific equipment classification that marked a pivotal era in diesel-electric locomotive economics.
