A mineral wagon is a railway goods wagon with open top and high sides, designed to carry loose bulk commodities, principally coal, iron ore, and other extracted minerals. The wagon sits low to the rails and typically rides on two bogies with substantial axle loads to support payloads of 20 to 40 tonnes or more, depending on design and rail operator specifications.

The defining feature is the high side wall, usually 1.2 to 1.5 metres above the floor, which prevents material from spilling during transit and allows full use of the loading height within the railway clearance envelope. Sides are typically riveted or welded mild steel plate, often with a slight inward taper toward the top to shed water and improve structural rigidity. The open design also permits rapid discharge: mineral wagons are emptied either by tippler mechanisms at collieries and docks, or by hand or mechanical unloading at industrial sidings.

Construction and discharge methods

Early mineral wagons had fixed sides and required manual unloading or fixed tippler equipment. From the mid-20th century, self-tipping wagons became standard in many systems, with hydraulic or mechanical tippers rotating the entire body sideways to drop contents onto an adjacent track or hopper. Some designs feature removable side panels or drop-bottoms for specialized cargo; others incorporate internal end-doors for precise control of discharge rate. The floor is usually sloped slightly and may be lined with timber, steel sheets, or left bare depending on the mineral and discharge method.

Mineral wagons are a mainstay of heavy industrial railways and legacy freight networks. They differ from covered hopper cars, which protect contents from weather and contamination, and from general purpose goods wagons with lower sides used for mixed cargo. The term is primarily British; North American equivalents are called ore cars, coal hoppers, or gondola cars depending on discharge mechanism and capacity.

Typical problems include side-wear from abrasive loading, rust perforation in steel sides exposed to damp mineral fines, and axle or bogie damage from uneven loading or impact during tippling. Regular inspection of welds, floor integrity, and coupling hardware is essential for safe operation on mainline tracks. Maintenance costs are substantial over the wagon's 40 to 60 year working life, particularly for vehicles operating in corrosive pit and dockyard environments.
