To taxi down an active runway in the opposite direction to that being used for takeoff.

backtrack: reversing on the runway you just used

Backtracking is the maneuver of taxiing an aircraft down an active runway in the reverse direction, moving opposite to the takeoff or landing direction in use. This happens after an aircraft has either aborted a takeoff attempt, rejected a landing approach, or completed a landing and now needs to exit the runway but the normal taxiway routing is blocked or unavailable. The aircraft turns around at a runway end and taxis back down the same runway surface toward the opposite end.

Air traffic control must clear a backtrack operation because the runway is technically active and other traffic may be in sequence for approach or departure. The pilot will request backtracking, and ATC will issue a specific clearance only when no other aircraft are on approach, on final, or awaiting takeoff clearance on that runway. Many airports prohibit backtracking altogether on high-traffic runways due to safety and efficiency concerns. On parallel runways or at quieter airfields, the procedure is more straightforward to coordinate.

When backtracking is necessary

Aborted takeoffs are the most common trigger. An aircraft reaches rotation speed, the pilot detects a mechanical issue, instrument anomaly, or engine malfunction, and rejects the takeoff before leaving the ground. The aircraft is now partway down a 10,000-foot runway and must stop, cool down if required, then return to the apron. Rather than wait for a tow truck or operate an unairworthy engine, the pilot may request backtrack, brake to a stop, then taxi back at idle power. Rejected landings, though less frequent, also require backtracking if the aircraft touches down but reverses the landing decision mid-rollout and the runway exit is blocked.

Backtracking increases surface wear and brake temperature on the aircraft, and it delays all other traffic awaiting that runway. Runway surface condition matters: wet, contaminated, or icy runways make backtracking riskier because braking action is compromised and directional control is less certain. Pilots must confirm adequate runway length remains behind them and good visibility along the runway before accepting a backtrack clearance. Friction and lateral forces on tires during the turn and reversal are also higher than during normal taxi, so weight and speed restrictions may apply on some aircraft types.

The term comes from the literal reversal of track, that is, retracing the path already traveled but in the opposite direction. It is distinct from pushback, which uses a tug or tow tractor, and from a go-around, which is a rejected landing performed while airborne. Backtracking is a procedural reality at all runways but is managed more carefully at major hub airports where traffic density makes it operationally costly and is often simply prohibited during peak hours.
