ballstock: the wooden handle on a printer's ink ball
A ballstock is the wooden handle attached to the back of a printer's ball, the tool used to spread and work ink across a forme or plate. The ball itself, a leather-covered sphere packed with wool or hair, does the actual inking work, but the ballstock is what the printer grips to apply pressure and move the ball across the type or plate in controlled, overlapping motions. Without a properly fitted handle, the job becomes exhausting and the inking uneven.
Ballstocks are typically turned from hardwood, often beech or maple, and measure between 4 and 6 inches long. The handle tapers slightly toward the grip end and connects to the ball via a wooden peg or socket joint. The joint must be tight enough to absorb the downward pressure applied during inking, sometimes 10 to 20 pounds, without flexing or rotating. A loose ballstock will transmit that pressure unevenly, causing streaks or skips in the ink transfer.
The grain and hardness of the wood matter because printers worked these handles hard. Cheap or soft ballstocks would split where the ball joined the handle, or the wood would crush and compress under repeated use. Experienced printers kept several ballstocks in rotation, letting them dry between sessions to prevent warping. A swollen or warped handle changed the pressure profile across the ball face and degraded work quality.
In hand-printing shops, ballstock work was repetitive and could cause repetitive strain in the wrist and shoulder. Printers developed a rhythm: apply the ball with even pressure in overlapping passes, lift, reset, repeat. A light ballstock reduced fatigue over hours of inking, but it also reduced the downward force available, forcing the printer to compensate with body weight and technique. The balance between tool weight and working pressure was one reason each printer often kept favorite ballstocks.
Ballstocks remain part of letterpress and relief printing practice today, though many commercial and hobbyist printers now use mechanical inking rollers. Hand-inking methods, including ballstock work, survive primarily in fine art printmaking and historical restoration. The term also appears in older technical manuals and apprenticeship documents, where the quality and maintenance of ballstocks was listed alongside type care and press adjustment as a basic competence.
