A linocut is a relief printing surface made from a sheet of linoleum, typically mounted on a wooden backing board. The printmaker carves away the non-image areas, leaving the design raised. When inked and pressed onto paper, the raised surface transfers the image. Unlike woodcuts, linoleum offers a uniform, consistent surface without grain, making it easier to cut fine detail without the wood splitting along the grain.

Linoleum blocks consist of a layer of solidified linseed oil mixed with cork dust and other binders, bonded to plywood or hardboard. Standard thicknesses run from 3 mm to 6 mm. The material is significantly softer than wood, so cutting tools encounter less resistance and require less force. This makes linocut more accessible for both industrial production and hand work, and explains its adoption in educational printmaking: users can achieve clean cuts with basic gouges and knives without extensive tool sharpening.

The carving process uses the same relief principle as woodcut, but linoleum's homogeneity eliminates the variable difficulty of working around grain direction. A single block can produce thousands of prints before surface wear becomes visible, especially if the line work is not too fine. The image is left in relief; the carved-away areas, recessed below the surface, remain unink and print white on the final image.

Production and industrial use

In commercial work, linoleum blocks were historically used for textile printing, wallpaper patterns, and decorative packaging before photochemical and digital methods took over those roles. The blocks' durability and the sharpness of line they could hold made them practical for long runs. Today, linocut remains common in educational contexts and in small-batch artistic printing where control and flexibility matter more than production speed.

The main limitation is depth of cut: the softer material can tear or crumble if undercut too aggressively, particularly in narrow channels or fine lines. Additionally, linoleum becomes brittle in cold and can soften in heat, making storage conditions important for longevity. The carving waste must be removed cleanly to prevent ink from settling in recessed areas where it will print as unwanted marks.
