A band printer is an industrial impact printer that produces output by striking characters etched into a continuously moving metal band. The band, typically made of steel or aluminum, rotates horizontally across the print line at constant speed. When the correct character position aligns with a given column, a solenoid-driven hammer strikes the paper against an inked ribbon, transferring the character image onto the page below. The band completes its cycle and returns to the start for the next line.

The metal band itself is the critical component, etched with a complete character set repeated many times along its length. Timing marks punched into the band allow the printer controller to detect character positions with precision. Common bands carried 48 to 64 characters per repeat, covering uppercase letters, numerals, and punctuation. The band moves at speeds between 300 and 600 inches per second, allowing print rates of 300 to 600 lines per minute depending on the character set size and hammer response time.

Construction and variants

Band printers typically accommodate paper widths from 8 to 15 inches, with multiple hammer banks allowing simultaneous strikes across the print width. Heavy-duty versions used in manufacturing, billing, and data processing ran continuously for hours. Some designs featured interchangeable bands, letting operators switch character sets or fonts without major reconfiguration. The ribbon mechanism advanced automatically between lines, and paper feed was controlled by sprocket wheels engaging the paper's pre-punched margin holes, standard on continuous form stock.

The technology emerged in the 1950s and dominated industrial printing through the 1970s, particularly for high-volume tabulating and accounting applications. Band printers were noisier and required more maintenance than thermal or early dot-matrix alternatives, but offered superior print quality and reliability at high throughput. They could handle multipart forms using carbon paper, a critical advantage before laser printing became economical. Wear on the band and hammer tips required regular inspection and replacement.

Band printers are now essentially obsolete in new installations, displaced by laser, inkjet, and line-matrix technologies. However, substantial installed bases remain in legacy industrial environments, particularly in utilities, manufacturing, and older data centers where reliability and capital investment protection favor keeping existing equipment running. Spare bands and components remain available through industrial printer specialists serving these aging systems.
