A draught engine is a large stationary steam engine designed to deliver sustained mechanical power for applications requiring heavy lifting, pumping, or continuous load work. Unlike engines built for speed or transportation, draught engines prioritize steady torque output and reliability over rapid acceleration. They were commonly installed at mines, quarries, foundries, water works, and industrial plants throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
These engines typically featured a single vertical or horizontal cylinder with a long stroke, delivering power through a flywheel to a rope, belt, or gear drive. A draught engine might produce 10 to 100 horsepower depending on cylinder diameter and steam pressure. The name reflects the engine's role: it was harnessed to do the heavy draught or pulling work that defined industrial labour before electric motors became standard. Winding gear at mines, for instance, relied entirely on draught engines to raise coal cages from depth.
Variants and application
Compound draught engines, using two or more cylinders in sequence, became common as boiler pressures rose; they extracted more work from each pound of steam. Portable versions, mounted on substantial frames with wheels, could be moved between sites though they remained far heavier than portable threshing engines. Fixed installations often sat in dedicated engine houses adjacent to the pithead or works entrance.
Draught engines required constant attendance. Operators had to monitor steam pressure, feed fuel to the boiler, oil moving parts, and manage the load brake to prevent dangerous overspeed when load came off suddenly. A broken rope or failed bearing could cause serious injury or damage. As electric motors became cheaper and cleaner to operate after 1920, draught engines gradually disappeared from working industry, though some examples survive in heritage collections and museums.
