A banker is a locomotive stationed at the foot of a steep railway gradient, ready to be coupled to the rear of trains that need assistance climbing the incline. Once attached, it provides additional tractive effort by pushing from behind, allowing trains that would otherwise stall or move dangerously slowly to maintain safe speeds and control. The banker uncouples at the summit or at a designated point and returns downhill to repeat the cycle.
Bankers are most common on lines with sustained grades exceeding 1 in 40 (2.5 percent), particularly in mountainous terrain or industrial areas with significant elevation changes. A typical banker might develop 800 to 1200 horsepower, depending on the ruling gradient and the tonnage being assisted. The locomotive is usually of robust but relatively lightweight design, selected for reliable low-speed pulling rather than speed. Many UK railways, especially in Scotland and Wales, maintained dedicated banker locomotives for their steeper routes well into the diesel era.
The job of banking requires precise coordination between the banker crew and the train crew ahead. The banker must couple smoothly, maintain even pressure through the climb to prevent wheel slip, and release at the right moment. Overheating of the banker's boiler or engine is a risk on long gradients, as is loss of adhesion in wet conditions. The practice is labour intensive: the banker must be worked back downhill or returned by another means after each assist, making it economical only where traffic volume or gradient severity truly demands it.
Banking differs from banking engines used in shunting yards, which assist in marshalling freight. It also differs from a pilot locomotive, which runs ahead of a train in mountainous terrain to scout for track hazards. The term originated in British railway practice and remains standard in UK railway terminology, though the practice itself has largely vanished with the arrival of powerful diesel and electric locomotives capable of handling steep grades unaided.
